DJI Mini 3 vs DJI Mini 4K: Comparison

DJI Mini 3 vs DJI Mini 4K: Comparison

The DJI Mini 3, released in 2022, brought big upgrades to the Mini line with a larger sensor, vertical shooting, and excellent flight time. The DJI Mini 4K, released in 2024, is positioned as a budget-friendly model, offering 4K video at a lower price point while keeping the ultra-lightweight design.

Both drones are under 250g, portable, and beginner-friendly, but they cater to slightly different users. Here’s how they compare.

Camera & Video Quality

Both drones are capable of shooting 4K at 30fps, but there are important differences in sensor size and features:

  • DJI Mini 3: Equipped with a 1/1.3" CMOS sensor, which captures more light for better image quality, improved dynamic range, and superior low-light performance. It also supports HDR video and true vertical shooting, ideal for social media content.

  • DJI Mini 4K: Uses a smaller 1/2.3" CMOS sensor, similar to the older Mini 2, and while it records 4K/30fps, the footage won’t match the Mini 3 in detail, dynamic range, or performance in challenging lighting.

If image quality matters most, the Mini 3 is the stronger choice.

Flight Time

  • DJI Mini 3: Offers up to 38 minutes with the standard battery, or up to 51 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus (note: this makes the drone heavier than 250g).

  • DJI Mini 4K: Up to 31 minutes of flight time, similar to the older Mini 2.

The Mini 3 clearly outperforms here, making it the better choice for longer flying sessions.

Obstacle Avoidance & Safety

Neither model includes obstacle avoidance sensors, as they are positioned as entry-level drones.

Both do, however, offer Return to Home (RTH), GPS stabilisation, and automatic hovering - features that make them reliable and beginner-friendly.

If obstacle detection is a priority, you’ll need to look at the Mini 3 Pro or newer Mini 4 Pro.

Transmission & Range

Both the DJI Mini 3 and DJI Mini 4K Uses O2 transmission system, offering a stable video feed with a maximum range of up to 10 km in ideal conditions

Nothing between the two drones here.

Portability

Both drones are designed to be highly portable, weighing under 250g.

Both fold down neatly into a backpack or travel bag, making them equally convenient for travel and outdoor adventures.

Price Comparison

  • DJI Mini 3: £459

  • DJI Mini 4K: £269

The price difference reflects the DJI Mini 3’s superior camera sensor, extended flight time, O2 transmission system, and vertical shooting option.
